The maestral is a favorable sailing breeze found off the Adriatic coast that brings joy to those plying its waters, and the name is further suggestive of the word maestro, which means 'teacher.' Maestral's efforts to help children without parental care to keep or find a home should, if successful, 'fill the sails' of efforts aimed at achieving our mission to help orphans and children without parental care in innovative and effective ways.
Maestral International is a team of leading global experts who are working to promote the development of sustainable families for orphans and vulnerable children. The firm was founded in March 2009 as an outgrowth of the Children in Families Initiative ("CIF") of the GHR Foundation, a substantial grant program that is currently supporting efforts in Vietnam, Nepal, Guatemala, Azerbaijan and Ukraine to expand effective community-based and family-oriented models for meeting the needs of OVCs. Drawing on their experience with CIF, the Initiative's advisors have now joined forces in response to the widespread need to establish child friendly policies that are thoughtfully developed, effectively managed and administered, and appropriately monitored and evaluated.
Maestral International particularly seeks to promote the availability to children, families and communities of a broader spectrum of care options and of experience in comprehensive interventions. Maestral also aims to promote greater coordination between public, multilateral, bilateral, and private agencies responsible for OVCs. Collectively, Maestral's principals have decades of experience working on child welfare and protection in some of the most challenging countries and environments in the world.
